Every Wednesday morning, a yellow OzHarvest truck pulls up outside South Sunshine Kindergarten in Melbourne’s west. For many families, its arrival is more than a delivery. It is practical relief in a climate of rising costs and financial strain.
Since 2022, South Sunshine Kindergarten has partnered with OzHarvest to provide rescued food to families in its community. Crates of fresh vegetables, eggs, frozen meals, baked goods and household essentials — diverted from retail and catering waste streams — are distributed with dignity to families attending the service.
The initiative emerged in response to increasing cost-of-living pressures. South Sunshine serves a culturally diverse community, including many newly arrived migrant and refugee families. A significant proportion of families hold concession cards or access income support. Financial stress was not abstract; it was visible.
Rather than treat food insecurity as separate from education, the kindergarten responded through practice.
The pantry initiative was educator-led. Through reflective practice, staff identified the need for practical, strengths-based support that aligned with the service’s philosophy of equity, inclusion and wellbeing.
In addition to food relief, educators established a clothing pantry and a book-sharing library. Over the past year, more than 200 books have been taken home by children. The message is clear: support extends beyond the classroom walls.

The link between food security and learning readiness is observable. Educators have noted improved concentration during group times, greater engagement in play-based learning and calmer emotional regulation among children.
The OzHarvest pantry has made a real difference for our family. It helps us stretch our budget, and my child loves knowing we are helping reduce food waste too. It makes us feel supported and connected.
