The new service, currently known as Yurran P–9 College Kindergarten (interim name), will be located at 1 Dunnart Parade, Werribee South and operated by not-for-profit early childhood provider BPA Early Learning.
The Victorian Government-owned kindergarten will offer Free Kinder programs for three and four-year-old children, including Pre-Prep, with enrolments for 2027 now open. For families in Werribee South, the service will provide a local sessional kindergarten option in an area where families have previously needed to travel to neighbouring communities for kindergarten.
Located on the Yurran P–9 College site, the kindergarten will also give children the opportunity to become familiar with a school environment before starting Prep and make daily routines easier for families with children attending both the kindergarten and school.
BPA Early Learning Chief Executive Officer Tim Watts said the opening represented an important addition to early learning in Werribee South.
“For the first time, families of three and four-year-olds in Werribee South will have access to a purpose-built sessional kindergarten in their own community,” Mr Watts said.
“BPA has a proud history of delivering high-quality, inclusive early learning across Melbourne’s west. As a not-for-profit, we are driven by the difference we can make for children and families.”
BPA Early Learning was founded in 1998 with a focus on ensuring children can access high-quality early learning regardless of their circumstances or where they live.
Mr Watts said BPA was excited to expand its presence in Wyndham after being selected to operate the new Department of Education kindergarten.
“BPA was founded on the belief that every child should have access to a high-quality early learning experience, regardless of their postcode, background or
circumstances.
“We’re delighted to bring that same commitment to the growing Wyndham community and to have been selected to operate the new kindergarten at Yurran.”
Supporting children from kindergarten to school
The new kindergarten includes four learning rooms and purpose-built indoor and outdoor learning environments, including landscaped play areas, substantial shade and spaces for children to explore, play and learn.
BPA Early Learning will deliver a play-based kindergarten program supported by intentional teaching and research-informed practice.
A new team of early childhood teachers and educators will be recruited for the service.
Mr Watts said families could expect a strong focus on each child’s individual development and wellbeing.
“Our teachers and educators will work to make children’s kindergarten years nurturing, fun and meaningful, while taking the time to understand each child’s individual needs.
“We want children to leave kindergarten feeling confident, connected and ready for
the next stage of their learning.”
Yurran P–9 College Principal Sadia Toqeer said having the kindergarten alongside the school would help children and families build connections from the beginning of their educational journey.
“Having the new kindergarten located adjacent to Yurran P–9 College will create a strong sense of belonging and connection for children and families from the very beginning of their educational journey,” Ms Toqeer said.
“Families are already appreciating the convenience of having their children nearby, making drop-off and pick-up easier. “We look forward to building strong connections between our kindergarten and
school community through shared celebrations, learning experiences and opportunities for our students to connect, learn and grow together.”
One location for the whole family
For local parent Deanna, whose older son is currently in Prep at Yurran P–9 College, securing a place at the new kindergarten for her younger child will make a practical difference to her family’s daily routine.
“Having both children at the same site will make drop-off and pick-up so much easier for our family,” Deanna said.
“There are already lots of parents at school drop-off who also have children around three and four years old. I think having the kindergarten here will help those children build friendships and become part of the school community before they eventually transition into Prep.”
The kindergarten-on-school-site model is designed to create stronger connections between early childhood education and school, while giving children greater familiarity with the people, environment and community around them before they start Prep.
